Design Dimensions For ‘Durable’ Physical Activty Trackers

DESIGN DIMENSIONS FOR SUSTAINED HEALTH BEHAVIOUR CHANGE THROUGH A LONGITUDINAL STUDY ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TRACKERS

Wearable activity trackers which help people change their behaviour to have a healthy lifestyle have become very popular recently. In parallel with this popularity, companies are increasingly asking designers to design such behaviour changing products. However, this task is challenging for many of them because we, as a community, currently do not possess the profound knowledge required for doing this effectively. Adressing this gap, this study aims to 1) clarify the impact physical activity trackers have on encouraging and maintaining health behaviour change, and 2) discover how user experience evolves over time and how it influences behaviour change in the long term. We conducted a longitudinal study that explores users’ experience with Fitbit One, a wearable physical activity tracker, for 6 months with the goal of evaluating its effectiveness in encouraging and maintaining health behaviour change. Based on this evaluation, we created an information source for designers, which provides guidance on activity tracker design
